hi, sorry to bother you but this is an emergency, I have a user online that can't get his mails through outlook since yesterday... he's using all correct settings apparently but not sure... I just upgraded to VPS and I thought maybe settings have changed

on this account I just use the email... mails still arrive and are stocked, but can't be retrieved by outlook.... looks like

if it's on outlook issue... I been telling them that much but....
also try to connect from my pc but can't...
but I never use outlook... so I may be doing the wrong thing... they always use it and they say it's stopped working about 24 hours ago
I dont think we've changed much at that time... maybe only installed PHP5 as addon
i think it's unrelated

The php5 addon is completely unrelated.

Please have your client list all the settings they have now.

SMTP Host
POP3 Host(or whichever receiving system they use).
Username
Password

We will need to know this in order to test it.

Please let us know if we can further assist you.

hi,
actually i'm trying myself now using:
POP3: mail.delaforet.ch
SMTP: mail.delaforet.ch
USER: info+delaforet.ch / This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

I tried all kinds of ssl options.... but so far no success either.

error messages from outlook refer to "ssl not supported by server or problem with port"
now outlook is using ports 110 / 25 or 995 / 25, depending on what ssl settings

There's no forward on this email address.

That's all I can say for now
Kindly
Matthieu

Hi,

The authentication method does not necessarily use SSL, just password auth. You can check "use auth" checkbox, but leave the method as automatic.
Please let us know if there is anything further we can do.

Thanks,

Hi,
so sorry, I tried each and every setting before and after contacting you and nothing works...
I would not have bothered you with an outlook problem if I thought the problem was from outlook... both my customer and I are unable to set it up while it's always been quite straightforward.

Matthieu

I just tried:

me@desktop:~/Desktop$ telnet mail.delaforet.ch 25
Trying 66.225.216.125...
Connected to delaforet.ch.
Escape character is '^]'.
220-server.rootshosting.net ESMTP Exim 4.68 #1 Thu, 20 Mar 2008 16:00:09 -0500
220-We do not authorize the use of this system to transport unsolicited,
220 and/or bulk e-mail.
^]
telnet> quit
Connection closed.
me@desktop:~/Desktop$ telnet mail.delaforet.ch 110
Trying 66.225.216.125...
Connected to delaforet.ch.
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK Hello there.
^]
telnet> quit
Connection closed.

Now, this shows that I am able to connect, what it doesnt show is, that the pop3(110) was very fast, while the SMTP was very slow.

So I went in, found some lingering mail processes, stopped those processes and it looks like everything is back to normal.

Can you have them try now?

Please let us know if we can further assist you.

Thanks,

Hi,

1. yes, it's very strange, it seems like it should work but it doesn't (also problem appeared at a time when we've not made major VPS modification
I attached a large jpg file with graphic explanation of settings but basically i think I tried all settings that should or should not work and couldnt' get it to work.
I also couldn't belive my customer when he complained.2. Greg Borbonus Says: "So I went in, found some lingering mail processes, stopped those processes and it looks like everything is back to normal."
if you tell me how to do that I'll file it with the rest of my hfw tickets knowledge base ^_^ for future self-support ^_^

Kindly

Matthieu

Hello,

I'm not sure what Greg did, honestly, it's possible there were Exim processes locked up that required a restart. It sound, though, that your client does not support STARTTLS but is attempting to use an SSL connection over port 25/26. If that's so, you should have them switch to port 465 instead. This is the SMTPS (SMPT over SSL) port for clients that don't support STARTTLS over the regular port.

Best Regards,

^_^
yes, this is working now, Erik R's the man, as usual.
Thaks a lot

PS. friendly comment/suggestion:
Actually I can see:
"-Outgoing Mail Server: (SSL) server.rootshosting.net (server requires authentication) port 465
-Outgoing Mail Server: mail.delaforet.ch (server requires authentication) port 25"
in /frontend/x3/mail/clientconf.html?redirectdomain=&acct=This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
... that line is confusing for newbies like me because it's asked to set to mail.delaforet and not server.rootshosing... which tends to tell us to avoid port 465... well... I got it now
Kindly
Matthieu
