Shared: Change File Ownership (it's on "nobody"

Hi,
domain with problem is hotel-a-to-z.com
I've been on a problem for many hours now: I can't save, update, rename, move, delete, change authorisation, edit and save the file component/com_jvlinx/lang/user_english.php, whether i try from file manager, legacy file manager, ftp...
I have even re-installed the whole joomla pack...

question A/ I really dont understant how that is possible... can that come from the programmers of the component? or is it a problem with my account?
question B/ I heard it's possible to do that from SSH, but I can't locate it on the cpanel where your help pages say it would be.
question C/ would it help to try to do it through SSH? do you know of another way?

Please feel free to try and play with the file if u if you don't belive me ^_^
Thanks a lot if you can answer these questions and it's ok if you tell me that support does not cover some of the questions
Kindly

Hi,

can you please try again now. There was wrong ownership set to folder /home/hotelato/public_html/components/com_jvlinx which caused anything under that folder unaccessible for you to modify. I've now set right ownership to it and it should be ok.

Please let us know if you need any further assistance.

hi,
Sorry,
that problem came up again.
Last time was on a version of the soft that I upgraded.
Now problem came up again on a css file /components/com_jvse/temp/jvse.css
Last time you told me that it was an ownership problem and that you fixed it... please tell me how I can fix that myself so I don't bother you again
from the software support side, there not aware of the issue... but it happened twice with 2 different versions of that soft... so... thing is.. I'd love to know how to check and fix that kind of thing myself... for the future ^_^
Thanks a lot if u got time to answer

Hi,

I fixed the ownership issue for:
/home/hotelato/public_html/components/com_jvse/
and
/home/hotelato/public_html/components/com_sef/

They were owned by user nobody, likely because your script changed it to that, however for this to be changed to correct owner you would need to be logged as root to server, and that is not possible on shared server. You can check with the script developer why is this happening, and if it happens again please do contact us to fix the issue.

Please let us know if you need any further assistance.

Thanks a lot

Hi,
I think that this is an issue related to this ticket.
I'm having the same problem again (cant' delete or update a file) but this time with a site that i have not touched for a while...
my website www.rootsreggaeclub.com (front page doesnt open anymore and I can't login to www.rootsreggaeclub.com/administrator)
that very file which calls teh error line in www.rootsreggaeclub.com/administrator is /home/reggae/public_html/administrator/templates/minted_one-point-five/lang/en.php and cant' be uploaded or deleted (can be edited but not saved, even from file manager)

I'm very sure that i have not modified anything on this website for about 2 weeks, and absolutely nothing regarding that template or the front page template for years

if there an ownership or authorisation problem again with that file, it can't be coming from an outside software (i think) and i am very sure that i did not update anything on that website since last time i saw it online

I checked that on 2 computers and got the same problem... i have not checked it from another IP //..... maybe u gonna tell me that u see it all good :( (i dont see anybody online to who i can ask and this looks like an urgent matter)

This is in fact an error with your script, not the server.

http://www.rootsreggaeclub.com/administrator/ now loads, but only as I manually edited the theme's langugae file.

Please try changing your theme via your admin menu, or contact the Joomla team for assistance.

Thanks!

Hi,
well... I belive you are right, the strange thing is that i have not changed anything in the script for a long time... that template has been up for several months, never had a problem... please tell me where was error in script, and why that prevented me from saving or deleting my file online. It's ok now, thank you, but i'd like to know what you have done....
Also, my front page is not opening at all (www.rootsreggaeclub.com)...
I know it's not your responsibility, but I have not modified that page and it was working 3 days ago when i last looked at it. Something dodgy is happening with that website and it worries me because it could spread to other websites that are more serious.
Could you give me a hint please
Thanks a lot for your help

Hello,

Line 28 of:

/home/reggae/public_html/administrator/templates/minted_one-point-five/lang/en.php

There was a missing $ at the beginning.

You can download that file via FTP, edit it, and re-upload.

Thanks!

    Posted On: 20 Nov 2007 12:24 AM
sorry to take more of your time
just to tell you that
1/ i tried to work on that file from cute ftp, from dreamweaver adn from cpanel's file manager, it was impossible to delete or move or upload the file in any way
2/ also, i swear that that template has been up for months and the script never gave me problems before, my first page never gave me problems before either... and i HAVE NOT changed anything from the time it was all working

something is going on here and it's worrying me for my other websites...

please give me a little bit more of your time to answer this:
a/ how is it possible that i am refused access to my files,
b/ how is it possible that a scrip works for months and stops working for no reason at all (i mean no change from my part whatsoever)?

I dont need an answer fast, but i really need to make light on that matter before it happens on more serious websites (now i got a website down that was up 3 days ago... i think you can understand my frustration for i have not touched it and have no clue where the problem is coming from...)

Thanks a lot

    Posted On: 20 Nov 2007 12:50 AM
Hello,

The file ownership on /home/reggae/public_html/administrator/templates/minted_one-point-five/lang/en.php was set to nobody (the UID the web server runs under) instead of your own user ID. This allows the web server to read and write to the file, but prevents your FTP account from manipulating it. This will happen whenever the web server (via PHP scripts) creates files. In order to access these, we'll need to manually change the ownership for you.

Similarly, it's possible one of the scripts on the server made an edit to this file, which broke it.

    Posted On: 20 Nov 2007 01:44 AM
ok... it's very annoying to have to bother you each time this happens... (isnt there a way to prevent this to happen again in the future?)

now there's got to be the same problem somewhere else on the same website that prevents other pages to open (such as the main index.php on http://www.rootsreggaeclub.com)
Could you run the unlock script on the whole website please because my site is still offline
Thanks a lot
Matthieu

(ps, i dont understand why the server should go and run a script on a language file like that.... moreover it seems that the file has been modified)

Hello,

There's no way, unfortunately, to prevent PHP scripts from creating their files under the nobody user on shared accounts. On dedicated/VPS servers we can set you up with suPHP which allows PHP scripts to execute under your own user ID, instead of under the web server's.

The index.php script at your site is returning no output currently. Have you made any changes to the scripts or configuration lately?

    Posted On: 20 Nov 2007 02:04 AM
not for several weeks
last update was the installation of atrio joomsef (for search engine frienly url generation)
that modif was done about 1 month ago and working with no problem
before that there was no update for 6 months to a year
I'm really confused and worried why this should happen actually
I will upgrade to vp, but probably not before a year (or at least before i get some more customers to sponsor it)
kindly

    Posted On: 20 Nov 2007 02:11 AM
Hello,

It actually appears that code execution never gets past the com_sef module, actually. It seems these files may have been modified. It may be a good idea to try restoring, at least the public_html files, to a known good backup.

We have the following backups available:

./daily/reggae.tar.gz Tue Nov 20 01:55:49 2007
./monthly/reggae.tar.gz Thu Nov 8 01:57:46 2007
./weekly/reggae.tar.gz Sun Nov 18 01:54:51 2007

If your site was known to be working on the 18th that would be where to start.

    Posted On: 20 Nov 2007 02:20 AM
Thanks for quick solution
i was away on the 18th and do not know if the site was ok
please try to restaure the 18th (i'll return in 2 hours and will tell u if it works, if not the 08th was working for sure)
Thanks for your kind help

    Posted On: 20 Nov 2007 02:32 AM
Hello,

OK, we'll begin the restore now and let you know once complete.

    Posted On: 20 Nov 2007 04:01 AM
Hello,

The backup has been restored and your site is now loading. It looks like some of these files may have been injected with malicious code. Can you verify which directories need to be writeable by the web server? We fix permissions on the rest to help to prevent this again.

    Posted On: 20 Nov 2007 04:48 AM
thanks for your help, the site is now online again
do not worry, this site is one of my learning / testing websites (enventhough there's some trafffic on it)
there are other domains where the same problem would bring me big trouble and they also use joomla at different degree.

I do not know which files are to be writeable by the server.
I'm thinking about upgrading to vp please give me some time (do you think an averlage user like me can manage it?).
meanwhile, if the problem happens again, i'll find out about the writeable files so we can lock it.
Thank you again
Kindly
Matthieu
PS please lets leave this ticket open so we can refer to it next time the same problem comes up

    Posted On: 20 Nov 2007 04:53 AM

I can place this ticket on hold for the time being, then. If you do encounter further issues, you can simply reply to it and we'll be able to see the ticket history.

I don't know what happened, but since you changed ownership my files are not accessible through ftp or file manager anymore.. I can see the folders but they seem empty.

The site is still working, but I can't access files at all, not even edit them.

I upgraded yesterday for a VPS and that may be related.

It was all working very well before you started to run premissions.
there must be something that has gone wrong, probably because of what's going on with the upgrade to VPS (I hope).

hi,
isn't there a backup just only for the url rayonghomeandland.com?
i got one from yesterday in the home directory of that url (backup-2.27.2008_13-45-58_homeandl.tar.gz).
if there's nothing more recent for that specific url (like a daily backup later than my backup), could you please reload it (for I dont think it's possible from cpanel)
Then I'll re-install the application and as again to change ownerships to see if it makes the same mess once more.

Hi,
Sorry to insist.
I asked several hours ago if you could run ownership again on rayonghomeandland.com .
I might already be upgraded to vps, but i don't know yet how to do it myself and I'll learn about vps as soon as i finish this website.
please do that for me that last time for this website so that i can confirm if it's what put my script out last night.
I've been waiting half day on you already (not that I'm complaining as long as we go forward)
